Hong Kong: Spoon by Alain Ducasse

HungryEpicurean.com - A Singapore Food Blog

After my visit to NOBU, I walked around the Intercontinental Hotel and saw a signboard that piqued my curiosity, “Spoon by Alain Ducasse“.

A lot has been heard of Alain Ducasse, one of which is holding the acclaim that he is also the only chef to hold 19 Michelin stars throughout his career. Not having had the opportunity to visit his Michelin Star restaurants, I paid a visit to his Spoon-branded restaurant. While I was not expecting mind-blowing cuisine, I was half-expecting something memorable, considering the branding of the author of Grand Livre De Cuisine. Join me while I relive my experience.

It was the Easter weekend and Spoon was offering a Easter Set Dinner that went for HK$988 per person (Plus 10% service charge).

Hong Kong: Yung Kee Restaurant

First thing in the 2nd morning of our Hong Kong trip, Glenn and I had planned to visit Lin Heung.  So on our way there in a cab (take the subway, its much faster and alot cheaper) we decided to ask the nice cabby where to eat in and around Central.  He then recommended us the Roast Goose from Yung Kee.

And while having our dim sum breakfast, the patrons that shared the same table as us talked about Yung Kee as well, which stoked our curiosity even more to try this restaurant.

Yung Kee is a Chinese-Cantonese restaurant that is well-known with the locals for serving roast goose and their Cantonese dishes.  And its generally a suitable place for families to have their dinner or lunch here.

Need I add that, Yung Kee was awarded 1 Michelin Star in the The Michelin Guide – Hong Kong / Macau 2010? That, alone, should be reason enough to plan for a visit to Yung Kee.

Hong Kong: Nobu Restaurant

I wanted to visit a Japanese restaurant while I was in Hong Kong. Flipping through the Tatler dining guide showed a recommendation to NOBU. I was practically staying within a 10 minute radius of Hotel Inter-Continental, I thought, why not give NOBU a try?

A partnership between Chef Nobu Matsuhisa and Hollywood actor Robert DeNiro, NOBU is synonymous with innovative new-style Japanese cuisine. Opened in 2006, NOBU InterContinental Hong Kong was Nobu’s first restaurant in Asia (ex Japan) and is among 21 NOBU and 4 Matsuhisa restaurants currently in operation around the world.

For the inquisitive, Chef Nobu Matushisa’s profile can be found on Wikipedia.

Hong Kong: Paul Lafayet Patisserie

HungryEpicurean.com

Searching through Openrice got us to a nearby French Patisserie near our hotel in K11. A quick Google showed that ‘Paul Lafayet‘, belongs to French expat, Toni Younes and that it is a relatively young upstart, having only opened its doors in February 2010.

Hong Kong: Antique Patisserie & Fine Chocolates

It was purely coincidental that we came across this little ‘English-(ala colonial) looking’ tea/cake shop along Central. Lying directly opposite of Tai Cheong Bakery lies Antique Patisserie & Fine Chocolates.

Hong Kong: Kai Kee Restaurant

CY and myself were feeling a tad hungry late at night and thus went around looking for a place to have supper around our hotel. So, off to a restaurant round the corner from our hotel it was.

Kai Kee is a restaurant that operates like your typical Hong Kong cafe.  The menu consists of mainly 鱼蛋粉 (Fishball noodles). Their version of Fishball noodles is different from one that you would see here in Singapore. It is cooked in a rich and flavourful soup, very much like your wanton noodles with soup.

Hong Kong: Lin Heung Tea House

HungryEpicurean.com

There are many things that you can associate Hong Kong with – Great Dim Sum, Friendly people, Lively tea houses and the list goes on.

蓮香樓 (Lin Heung Tea House) is the epitome of such great such association – Excellent Dim Sum, Friendly and Hospitable people and a lively tea house (char cha teng).
