La Ristrettos Cafe

La Ristrettos Cafe

If you’re thinking of where you should head to for good coffee and brunch, then give La Ristrettos a try! I’ve first heard about La Ristrettos from an ex-colleague, E, and his girlfriend who have sung praises of it for a long time.

We went on Labour Day, being the first day that the cafe was serving up their own roasted coffee beans.

The coffee served, borders on being somewhat low on the levels of acidity but is relatively smooth and easy to drink. If you’ve had coffee from Forty Hands before, this would be a distinct contrast. Again, there’s really no bad or good here – it all boils down to one’s personal preference.

The food that we ordered, in general, was comforting. Both dishes that we ordered were specials for the day. J had the scrambled eggs topped with smoked salmon served with a light yoghurt based herb dressing served on top of a slice of bread. Everything worked well together and each element of the dish was perfectly executed.

The pancakes served with bananas with a drizzle of caramel sauce is nothing special, but there was nothing to fault it by.

If there’s a complaint to be made, it has to be that service was terrible on that day. Understandably, it was Labour Day and the staff probably had to drag themselves to work on a public holiday, but that should not be reason to sulk at every request every customer made.

There was one particular incident that made me feel somewhat infuriated about the level of service at the cafe – a male staff member while bringing a cup of hot coffee to another customer, accidentally dropped the cup on a female customer who was standing around waiting for an empty seat. Instead of showing some sign of remorse, he quickly turned around, headed to the kitchen to get the mop. Neither one word of apology was uttered nor was a show of concern offered.

The verdict

Would I go back again? Honestly, I would. Both the drinks and food were fairly decent and economically prices (i.e. drinks were < SGD 8 and food items were generally < SGD 20) and location makes it all the more quaint and somewhat desirable as a place to while some time away. The outdoor seating outside the cafe looks rather inviting as well.

My only gripe with this place is its limited seating capacity. However, a kind word to the owners of the cafe is, that the desired level of service needs a serious rethink.

Food – 8 / 10 stars
Drinks – 7 / 10 stars
Ambience – 7 / 10 stars

  1. Great review, thanks for sharing. Makes me want to visit the place too.

Hope to see more reviews from you

  2. I agree that their service leaves much to be desired. The coffee and food are both to my great liking, but I ‘boycotted’ them for a few months after an unpleasant experience with the staff. Oh well, I’m going back there again today… *fingers crossed*
