I’ve been wanting to go to SALT at Ion Sky on the 55th floor of Orchard ION ever since they opened their doors (to much fanfare, I must add).
I’ve heard quite a bit of Chef Luke Mangan while doing my research of Sydney restaurants and although I have not had the chance to dine at his restaurant in Sydney, based on all the positive reviews, I was expecting a rather good meal at SALT. And if food isn’t reason enough for me to enjoy my visit, the view from the 55th floor of ION Orchard should be.
Opting to have the set lunch which cost S$40++ per pax, both my dining companion and myself chose the same items for the appetizer and main course. You can view the latest set lunch menu here: http://saltgrill.com/docs/Salt_Grill_Weekday_Lunch_Menu.pdf
In addition to the set lunch menus, SALT has two degustation menus at $140 and $200 respectively (Menus are available on request) and from its ala carte menu.
Note: The set lunch menu is only available on weekdays.
After being seated, we were offered some complimentary bread – one of which was white.
Unfortunately, the bread came out cold – which was quite the downer in my humble opinion.
For our appetizer, we had the ‘glass’ Sydney crab omelette which came in a miso mustard broth.
I liked how the individual flavours of the dish came together – the citrus from the salad tossed with an Asian dressing, the light savoury taste of the miso mustard broth and the natural sweetness of the crab meat (abundant if I may add) inside the omelette.
On a side note, I found a recipe on the Luke Mangan website for a similar dish: http://www.lukemangan.com/documents/LM_easterrecipesforwebsite.pdf
For our main course, we had the grilled beef.
Frankly speaking, while it was tender, it came across to me as being just slightly above average. Maybe I’ve been spoilt by beef dishes served at other restaurants. That said, the butter (pictured above in orange) melted slowly over the beef infusing flavours into the beef, and that I thought was quite a good idea both for flavour and presentation purposes.
Additional Side Orders
Sautéed mushrooms (S$15++)
Sautéed Asparagus (S$12++)
They were tender and well seasoned.
Desserts and Coffee/Tea
We did not have dessert at SALT, instead opting to have cakes at K-ki, but if you wanted, as part of the set lunch, you can have a serving of the Dessert of the day and coffee/tea for an additional S$15++.
