Balthazaar is consistently ranked as one of the better restaurants in Perth, especially in the CBD region. One of the restaurant and dining guidebooks, even referred to it as, “The Restaurant-to-Go in Perth“.  Balthazar is rather centrally located, just off St. Georges Terrace and within a few minutes walk from the Esplanande Bus Port.

I wondered if the restaurant would live up to both the heightened expectations and bold claims.

This was a surprise; When it was first presented to the table, admittedly, I let out a big sigh. I had expected a little more. But when I had the first taste of the dish, I had a smile across my face.

For lack of a better descriptive, the dish was flavourful and the textures interesting. The scallops were well marinated and both the Chestnuts and Pearl barley gives the dish a bite. FYI, the pearl barley was likely to have been marinated in squid ink.

I cannot really remember where I had previously read about this dish – probably on a blog post, on a review on Urbanspoon or an article in the newspapers. Suffice to say that I distinctly remember the review being rather positive.

I definitely could see why that reviewer gave the duck dish his/her thumbs up. I love the way that they do their duck dish.

We, Cantonese, have our way with our ducks; We roast them and if I may, we roast them well. The Teochews braise their ducks in their special braising liquid; Some even lasting for generations. At Balthazar, the dish is served in two components –

(1) The Duck Breast – perfectly cooked. Tender and flavourful

(2) Duck Crepe – filled with Duck Meat. The crepe was thin and the filling was well marinated.

Combining the two elements was the Madeira reduction which I adored! It’s not just sweetness of the reduction that I liked, but rather the combination of spicy and sweet flavours of the added whole peppercorns.

But, truth be told, A$40 is not cheap. But Perth is one of the most (if not, the most) expensive cities to live in Australia.

It’s very unfortunate that the dessert, in all truth, was all style and no substance. Okay, perhaps that’s taking it a little too strong an opinion. Let’s just say, I would not order this again!

Alright, as adventurous as my taste buds are, I disliked the Black Garlic ice cream. It was too pungent for my liking. Whatever was I thinking when I went ahead to order this!

I was hoping that the other component to the dessert would remedy the encounter with the ice cream. Unfortunately, it was exceedingly sweet. Suffice to say, I returned my plate rather untouched.

    Ah what a pity for dessert! Jewels Artisan Chocolate have a new black garlic dessert menu and i tried the black garlic macaron- it’s certainly an acquired taste!

    I’m a faithful follower of masterchef austrailia and it features so many restaurants frm sydney. Makes me want to really visit austrailia, specifically sydney, again just for the food!

    • Rachel, yes yes a pity. It looks sooooooooo beautiful, doesn’t it? Definitely an acquired taste – one that I would probably not be acquiring in the next few years! But then again, I’m sure for every flavour, there are its supporters and its detractors.

      I LOVE Masterchef Australia too! Yes Sydney 🙂 I Loved Loved Sydney! Can’t wait to go back there soon!

      • Thanks for the comment, yes I have found that cooked thick bones can splinter. I am sticking to frozen chicken thighs, smoked pork hocks, and raw beef knuckle bones to keep my dogs teeth clean
