I can’t speak for you but Jack’s Place was my first foray into the realm of proper Western Food.  I humbly admit that up till that point of time, the only Western restaurant (if you can ever categorize them as restaurants), was McDonald’s. I used to visit Jack’s Place almost once a month, always right before my piano lessons when I was 7-8 years old. It was also at Jack’s Place, that I had my first bite of a Beef Steak (and have  never looked back since).

Indeed, Jack’s Place’s no longer posses that dimly-lit old world charm about them, yet dining here, with their steaks served in their signature hot plates definitely brings back wonderful memories of yester years.

Soup of the Day: Cream of Potato

The cream of potato soup was decent, a little dull, if you will. But hey, for just an additional $4.20 for a soup and dessert addition, I’m not complaining.

Garlic Bread

There’s something about garlic, butter on toasted bread that makes garlic breads a joy to savour.

By the way, Jack’s Place serves their bread straight out of the toaster/oven. That alone, puts many of the ‘fine dining’ establishments to shame.

Escargots in shells (per half dozen) S$9.50

The closest comparison to Jack’s Place that I can think off, at the top of my head is, The Ship and Shahslik.  I had previously reviewed the escargots served at The Ship and thought that it was most fitting only to review Jack’s version too. At less than S$10 for 6 of these excellent snails, they were definitely value for money.

However, I thought that Jack’s rendition was a little plain tasting for me. That said, I must add that they were not overcooked.

Fish & Chips S$14.00++
Crumbed Pacific Dory fillet served with fries & fresh salad

When I was much younger, Fish & Chips used to be my usual order at any Western dining outlet (e.g. Swensens at the old World Trade Centre etc.) before I had my first taste of beef. I had fond memories of Jack’s Place’s Fish & Chips – although, I’ll have to admit, it was more of french fries than the fried fish itself.

Jack’s place rendition of the perennial favourite is, I must add, pretty good value for the price! 2 fillets of of adequately thick Dory in a crispy breadcrumb batter.

Tenderloin with Assorted Mushroom (S$23.50++)
Served on a bed of mashed Potato with assorted Mushroom sauce

Jack’s place got their doneness perfectly. My dad ordered his to be done medium and came out just as ordered.

The smooth mash was the perfect complement to the perfectly grilled beef. If I were to pinpoint one letdown in this dish, it would have to be the ‘assorted mushroom sauce’. The mushroom sauce lacked flavour that would make this the perfect beef tenderloin.

May I also add that for S$23.50++, one wouldn’t really go too wrong for a fairly large piece of tenderloin.

Dessert of the Day: Profiterole

The dessert came as part of an additiontional S$4.20 that included a soup of the day.

I wish I had good words for the dessert, but the dessert was clearly a disaster. Where should I start? The (probably mass manufactured) ice cream was FAR too sweet, and I really mean it. The sweet chocolate sauce did not help either.
