Thai Accent

Thai Accent Vivocity - HungryEpicurean - Singapore Food Review Blog

The ever-so-lovely neighbour and I paid a visit to one of her favourite Thai haunts – Thai Accent at Vivocity. The neighbour has spoken highly of Thai Accent on a few occasions, so when she suggested going there for lunch, I graciously accepted.

I’ve never been to Thailand yet (although I was planning a trip in November but today’s bombing has somewhat deters me from heading there) but I’ve personally had my fair share of Thai food in Singapore – Bangkok Jam, Thai Express, Sabai and even the less-heard-of, presumably authentic restaurants in Golden Mile Shopping Centre where I once interned.

Gunther’s

Gunther's - HungryEpicurean - Singaproe Food Reviews Blog

Helmed by Chef Gunther Hubrechesen, this 3 year old french fine dining restaurant is a partnership between Chef Roberto Galetti of Garibaldi and Chef Gunther himself. During his 5 years stint working for the Les Amis group, he managed to bring the Les Amis restaurant to the 83rd position in the UK Restaurant Magazine’s list of Best 100 Restaurants in 2007, which is by no means an easy feat.

Having recently been voted at number 84 into the S. Pellegrino World’s Best 100 Restaurants 2010 and Asia’s Top 7th restaurant in the 2009/2010 edition of The Miele Guide, I was very much keen on visiting Gunther’s and to see if the hype around the restaurant is all justified.

(Disclaimer: The information for the previous 2 paragraphs were lifted from the Restaurant’s Media Release.)

It was most fortunate that I was free, one weekday afternoon and decided to have lunch with my Dad. Having walked past Gunther’s and perused the menu when I visited Garibaldi’s not too long ago, the name “Gunther’s” was immediately heard. And so, off to Purvis Street we drove. Read more

Italiannies

Italiannies Singapore - A Review by HungryEpicurean

Dinner buddy and I organized a quick dinner catch up sometime back in June. After much deliberation, we decided on a new-ish Italian restaurant at TripleOne Somerset. From the restaurant name, I had thought of the restaurant as a pure Italian play in the restaurant scene and not as an American-Italian diner as their website so proudly states.

To tell you the truth, while I knew that the old Singapore Power building had recently undergone a retrofit, I did not know that it was to be renamed Tripleone Somerset. At least, it was not renamed as TripleOne@Somerset (noting Singaporeans and their obsessive compulsion to use the ‘@’ sign. Read this quirky, fun post for more on this bad branding.

We arrived earlier than our reservation and tables were not freed up yet. As a polite gesture, the manager offered us a glass of coke each to quench our thirsts while we waited at the bar and I very much appreciated this. However, besides the complimentary glass, service was clearly lacking. They clearly had forgotten about the complimentary bread (I’m not a sucker for free things but — just one of those things where I saw tables who arrived earlier, seated behind us getting their breads while we were not served ours.

Jack’s Place

Jack's Place at Great World City - HungryEpicurean - Singapore Restaurant Review Food Blog

I can’t speak for you but Jack’s Place was my first foray into the realm of proper Western Food.  I humbly admit that up till that point of time, the only Western restaurant (if you can ever categorize them as restaurants), was McDonald’s. I used to visit Jack’s Place almost once a month, always right before my piano lessons when I was 7-8 years old. It was also at Jack’s Place, that I had my first bite of a Beef Steak (and have  never looked back since).

Indeed, Jack’s Place’s no longer posses that dimly-lit old world charm about them, yet dining here, with their steaks served in their signature hot plates definitely brings back wonderful memories of yester years. Read more

Hong Kong: Shui Liu Shan Desserts

This is a way overdue blog post and it because of technical errors and other commitments but I digress.

Hong Kong is place well known for their desserts as well.  Having said that, I’m going to introduce to a dessert chain that uses mango as their main ingredient.  Hui Liu Shan Desserts is a chain with stores located all over Hong Kong, well known for serving their desserts made mainly from Mango.  Mango puree, mango slices, mango dices, mango ice cream – every single possible way of eating mango in a nice and chilled manner, they have it covered.

Glenn and I, sat down at a busy store just opposite Time Square and had 2 desserts.  Mainly the Mango with Ice Jelly and Mango with Coconut.  The desserts are made to order – which means, the puree and the mangoes are freshly cute and pureed on the spot to preserve maximum freshness of the dessert.

Coast @ 1-TwentySix

Coast at 1-TwentySix - HungryEpicurean - Food Reviews of the Best Singapore Restaurants

A recent invitation by the One Rochester group offered me the opportunity to visit one of their restaurants within East Coast Park. Much like its sister restaurant One Rochester, COAST@1-TwentySix, features a communal menu and an indoor & outdoor concept.

A direct lift from the press release mentions that Coast “Takes cues from coastal dining trends in picturesque destinations like the Almafi Coast, the Hamptons at Long Island, New York City, COAST seeks to propagate 1-TwentySix as a chic seafront lifestyle dining mecca in Singapore.” I’ve yet to visit the above mentioned places (although, I do intend to visit Long Island soon), but I was very keen to see first hand if COAST manages to live up to their own aspirations.
