Otto Ristorante

Otto Ristorante - HungryEpicurean Singapore Food Review Blog

OTTO Ristorante, in my opinion, is the best Italian restaurant in Singapore. Much like how Saint Pierre is for French. Chef Michele Pavanello and his team consistently deliver excellent pastas and main courses and promotional menus and quarterly refreshes of the menu helps to keep one going back for more. Most memorable of this visit was trying Chef’s Sea Urchin pasta creation, which I must admit, not only sounded interesting at first, it was pretty much a novelty to me.

Another key attribute that sees me returning back to a particular establishment lies in the quality of the service staff. The service here is nothing short of being impeccable. Everyone, from the lovely receptionist at the door to Paolo, the affable Italian general manager, are friendly and always seem to go the extra mile when dining at OTTO.

Trattoria L’Ancora

Trattoria L'Ancora - HungryEpicurean - Singapore Food Blog

Your humble blogger has blogged about the history of the now-defunct Borgo, and  its successors, Al Borgo and Borgata. Today, it is time for me to blog about the restaurant that took over Borgo’s premises – L’Ancora.

In terms of the interior design and decor, much of the old Borgo still remains except for the grill that Mimmo used to be helm, is now an air conditioned, walk-in dry cheese room and store. The same tables and chairs that once lined Borgo, today line L’Ancora; the bar counter, too, looks exactly as it were.

My sister and her family are regulars to this Italian joint and has, many a time, spoke of their excellent pastas. Today, I was on a mission, a mission to understand the reasons behind her many return trips.

Garibaldi

Garibaldi Italian Restaurant - HungryEpicurean Singapore Food Review Blog

It was 7pm when I stepped into the restaurant; seeing  a filled dining room, my expectations were naturally heightened. The dining room looked pretty much the same from how I remembered it to be, dark walls, dim lightning and relatively large tables, all clad in white table cloth.

This blog had visited Garibaldi once previously but unfortunately, that visit did not leave much of an impression. I’m not saying that the food served was in anyway bad, it was just, how should I put it, not mind blowing?  This would most definitely explain my 2 year hiatus from the restaurant.

A part of me, was hoping that Garibaldi would not disappoint and figuratively blow my mind away, yet the other wants to be reserved, given the magnitude of both positive and not-so-positive comments that I’ve heard.

Din Tai Fung

Din Tai Fung - HungryEpicurean Singapore Restaurant Review Food Blog

When the craving for those bite sized dumplings that are filled with flavourful broth and minced pork (a.k.a. Xiao Long Baos), two places come to mind – Crystal Jade and Din Tai Fung. Granted that there are other restaurants serving up  XLBs, Din Tai Fung’s xiao long baos are still my favourite.

Din Tai Fung recently hosted a meet-the-bloggers outing where a Din Tai Fung master chef showed us the art of making Xiao Long Baos. In my opinion, calling it an art would be an understatement in itself. The chef informed us that due to the stringent quality controls and the need to uphold it’s status as one of the world’s Top Ten Best Restaurants as ranked by The New York Times, a chef needs to complete at least two years’ of training, before he or she is allowed to make these dumplings.

But, a show-and-tell session would have been far too boring. Din Tai Fung, arranged for us to personally make these dumplings, albeit with red bean filling. Understandably, it was difficult to achieve the required characteristic 18-folds of a properly made xiao long bao. (Hey, who was I to kid!)

But just when we thought that a show-and-tell-and-make session was more than enough fun for the morning, we were treated to a sumptuous lunch. Read on, to see what delicacies we had the honour of sampling. Read more

inSing.com – Hawker Lover Contest

Just last week, your humble author received a hand delivered “We Love Hawker Food Kit” from inSing.com. The kit consisted of a coffee glass commonly used in Hawker Centres, a “Good Morning” towel and tissue pack which read “Got People Sitting Here!”. Personally, I thought that it was quite a nice combination, as far as marketing collateral are concerned.

Here’s a snippet from the press release:

inSing.com has launched a contest to discover the island’s most passionate foodie, someone who recommends the best hawker stalls in Singapore, who will uncover and feature never been found hawker gems and who will specialise in writing recommendations on the top hawker fare for inSing.com’s Food and Drink section.

The Hawker Lover contest winner will join inSing.com’s Food and Drink’s team of great writers, including prominent food blogger Leslie Tay, and renowned food critics and chefs Violet Oon and Sylvia Tan, in providing our readers with objective, informed and creative reviews of Singapore’s favourite food places and dishes.

As well as a regular column, he or she will also receive $1,000 cash a month for six months as well as a Canon EOS 550D DSLR camera to snap pictures of the delicious dishes they try.

The contest runs for eight weeks. To take part, contestants will simply have to complete a series of questions – to help us size up their passion for hawker food, to flaunt their writing skills and to showcase their reviews to our readers.  Entries will be judged by Leslie Tay as well as inSing.com readers via a voting tool.

Valentino’s

HungryEpicurean - Food Reviews on the Best Food Places in Singapore

It seems that Valentino’s is now ubiquitous with Casual Italian Family Dining (“Fine-ish prices though”), and it is not hard to see why. Friendly staff (though, they seem to treat their regulars a lot better) and comfort Momma’s cooking are clearly reasons why people continue to patronize Valentino’s on a regular basis. Personally, the ever changing list of  ‘specials’ is THE reason why I return.

My last visit was way back in February and the review can be found here.

The Ship Restaurant

HungryEpicurean - The Search for Satisfaction - Singapore Food Blog

The Ship Restaurant at Shaw Centre has been around for the longest time. Just a simple line would better describe its longevity than just a simple numerical figure of years of existence:

It used to be a place where my parents went for dinner dates, back in their courting days.

My prior visit to The Ship was probably 2-3 years ago, back when the shops around the restaurant were open for business (most of them have a ‘For Lease’ sign on the glass doors). I clearly remember there being a Samsonite store directly opposite the restaurant.

So what did I think of this one-time popular Hainanese style western steak house? Does it hold its own against the new entrants to the ever-vibrant Singapore F&B scene?
